Reality Struck

Today I was asked the dreaded question (dreaded to me at least) "do you watch any TV shows?" Even though I was inclined to lie and say "no, I don't have much time for TV", I thought "who am I kidding?"

I'd love to describe myself as a museum-goer, craft-fair fanatic, theatre buff, live music aficionado, etc. Although I extremely enjoy all those things, I don't do them as frequently as I would like to. So my answer to the question was a shameful "yes, I watch lots of TV shows."

The next question was "do you watch reality TV?" and to add to my surprise, I admitted out loud "yes, i watched every episode of the Jersey Shore." Yikes!!! If I'm so embarrassed about it, why blog about it, you might ask. Well, after the conversation was over, I kept thinking how disappointed I was in myself for not investing my time (which I have lots of right now) in something more productive and constructive.

I'm one of those annoying people who can bore someone to death by describing how great my favorite TV shows are. I have literally hung up on some friends because my TV shows are on, or not answered phonen calls during the allotted time... (busted!) I get deeply annoyed when reruns air for no reason what-so-ever. Furthermore, I am seriously thinking about starting a petition to make The Office an hour long sitcom, it's just simply too funny and entertaining to only last 30 mins.

Although, I enjoy lots of fictional shows, I spend the majority of my time watching Reality TV. I was horrified when I recently learned that they are scripted just like a regular show, but nevertheless, I still pretend that I'm watching "reality". My favorite reality show is The Biggest Loser. I love it, because it's two hours long and I am always mesmerized by the transformations. Another show, I am beginning to like is The Buried Life on MTV. On the latter, I like the parts when they help other people fulfill their wishes. The list goes on, Little People, Big World, The Real Housewives of Orange County/Atlanta, Project Runway, The Hills, Moving Up, Jon & Kate Plus 8 (before Jon turned out to be a douche bag), Anderson Cooper 360. Well, you get the point. I'm addicted to TV. I like to let my mind drown in useless information, especially when I need to escape my own reality.

Maybe, one day, I will be the kind of person who can say "I'm too busy doing important stuff to watch TV", right now, TV fits in my schedule, and I'm lucky to have enough time to balance it with everything else in my life.

I too can be doing so many more productive things once my son falls asleep. But all I ever do is just watch tv till my mind shuts down and falls asleep. I'm not into the reality tv shows, but definitely all the fiction crap: 24, Brothers & Sisters, Grey's, Psych, Burn Notice, Accidentally on Purpose, Gossip Girl, Nip/Tuck, the big bang theory...and my list goes on and on...thanks to TiVO!!! greatest invention ever!!!! I can watch shows whenever without missing calls ;))
